2000 Fire Statistics...Did You Know:

"In 2000, U.S. firefighters responded to just under two million fires." In other words, every 16 seconds a fire department was called on to respond to a fire. And, while the actual number of fires that occurred throughout the U.S. in 2000 did not change much from previous years, the number of civilian fire deaths increased (source: 2000 US Fire Loss Annual Report/NFPA Journal, Sept/Oct 2000).

In 2000...

  • The average commercial fire-only installation costs $8,693, down 26.7 percent from 1999.
  • The average residential fire-only installation costs $1,441, up 57.8 percent from 1999.

  • US structures sustained approximately $10 billion in direct property damage in 1999, a 16.2 percent increase from 1998 totals.
  • More than 1.8 million fires were attended by public fire departments in 1999, an increase of 3.8 percent compared to 1998.

  • Smoke detectors are in at least 93 percent of US homes.
